Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland compressed their operations by moving into two buildings, one being a 1950’s building in Kruununhaka, Helsinki.
As the property owner, SLS’s interest was to develop the properties with dignity. The aim was to modernize the premises while maintaining and increasing their value. On top of renovating the interiors, extensive changes were made to the façade. Working to preserve, study and disseminate knowledge about Finland-Swedish culture, SLS was founded in 1885.

Their new space needed to be a meeting point that enables fluent interaction and academic research work. Sensitively listening to the administration and employees of the scholarly society, we designed a combination of modern and classic that strengthens the identity of SLS: a fresh entirety that communicates the actions that take place in the space. Light flows through the airy shelving systems and glass walls – as here flow knowledge, tradition, and new impetus.

“This is what a modern scholarly society looks like”
